BSc HPLC Bars Review
Body Science, being an Australian leader in the supplement market, makes not only significant releases in sports supplement lines, but also the protein bars/snack foods space as well. Over the years, the BSc range of bars and snacks have been some of the most popular – thanks to some great flavours, textures and nutritional profiles.
Well, they’ve done it again with their new High Protein Low Carb Bars, providing a similar ingredient profile to their previous bars (and many other HPLC bars on the market), but with some flavours and textures that we’ve never seen before in the low carb bar market. These could be the best-tasting low carb bars out there…
What’s in Them?
Let’s start by taking a look at the ingredients:
So, you can see right away that each 60g bar (this nutrient panel is for the Triple Choc flavour) delivers around 19g protein, with 7g fat and 4g net carbs. Don’t forget – net carbs = total carbs minus fibre and sugar alcohol content (which are not considered usable carbs as the body doesn’t digest them). This is a decent macro ratio for a bar this tasty, and at 210 calories per bar, it won’t break the diet for most people.
Ingredients-wise, we start with a protein blend – whey concentrate, whey isolate, calcium caseinate and soy protein isolate – nothing out of the ordinary there. Next up, the ‘No Added Sugar Protein Chocolate’ – and this is where much of the great flavour comes from – BSc has really hit the mark with these ‘healthier’ chocolate substitutes, making these bars taste like regular junk food, but not hitting the love handles nearly as hard. Later on in the ingredients panel you’ll plenty of sugar alcohols/fibres such as maltitol, sorbitol and polydextrose – these give the bars sweetness and texture, with a far lower caloric load. Finally, ingredients such as peanuts, stevia, cocoa, salt and natural colours all find their place in the mix.
We’ll say straight up that this isn’t the ‘cleanest’ protein bar on the market – it’s certainly not one of those six-ingredient protein bars that has very little flavour and is painful on the teeth to eat, but on the other hand – it’s not a Snickers with a dash of protein powder either. Overall, we’d be happy to add one of these to our daily macros with no worries!
What do They Taste Like?
While a decent 19g whack of protein and 210 calories per bar is a positive, you’re really buying the Body Science HPLC Bars for the taste. They currently come in eight flavours: Peanut Caramel, Choc Mint, Maple & Cinnamon Scroll, Triple Choc, Cookie Dough, Rocky Road, Cookies & Cream and Hazelnut Praline. Which is best? Let’s just say that none of them were left in the wrappers after our taste tests…
Thoughts on our favourites:
- Choc Mint – Gives that nice ‘Mint Slice’ flavour in each bite. A little sweet, but not that artificial mint flavour we’ve tasted in other bars.
- Triple Choc – Super indulgent – tastes like a supermarket candy bar!
- Cookies & Cream – Not as sweet as you might think – nice subtle flavours but super tasty.
- Rocky Road – Yum. Chocolate and jam all the way.
What are the Prices Like?
We’re happy to say the BSc High Protein Low Carb Bars are priced fairly and consistently with the rest of the bar market. A box of 8 x 60g will set you back $25.95 (as at time of publishing!), which equates to a little over $3/bar. That’s quite reasonable, especially if you’re buying a box a week as a treat to add in to your daily meal plan.
We were blown away by the taste of the Body Science HPLC Bars, enough so that we could choose them over other perhaps cleaner protein bars. They’re priced well, have a huge flavour range and give you a decent whack of protein – what more can you ask for?
